offers the work of more than 100 Tasmanian artists and crafts people. We choose each piece personally, not in terms of what is fashionable or what sells best, but according to its ability to reflect something of Tasmania.
Born in London, Richard studied at the South East Essex School of Art. He started work as an apprentice in commercial art in 1947. Later, after spending four years at sea in the merchant navy and another spell in London, he arrived in Hobart in 1966 and not long after took up full time painting as a watercolour artist.
Having always drawn and painted since childhood, Richard has been fortunate enough to be able to pursue the dream throughout his life. Odd corners, highlighted sails on distant seas, old buildings with ancient vegetation and skies, violent and calm are among his favourite topics. He works mainly on location and also in the studio from sketches made on the spot. “Tasmania is a painter’s dream especially for a watercolour artist who is living as I do on an island in the Huon estuary….”
Richard has exhibited in major galleries in Tasmania, on the mainland and overseas. He has been the recipient of many art prizes and is an exhibiting member of the Australian Society of Marine Artists (ASMA) and associate member of the British Watercolour Society (ASS.BWS).
