Terrence Gough

Born in Hobart in 1948, Terry became very interested in all aspects of art while attending High School. In 1970 he graduated from training as a teacher at the Tasmanian School of Art and began his teaching career in the following year.

In July 2003 Terry retired from his position as Head of the Art Department at Cosgrove High School, a position he had held for over 32 years. Terry was then awarded the Learning Together Award for educational excellence in the Derwent District (for being an outstanding teacher of the Visual Arts and for advocating the notion of life long learning). He has since then taken on more Adult Education classes and classes with the Colour Circle.  Terry has served as President of the Art Society of Tasmania from 1994 on and in 2001 he was made a Life Member.  In 2010 Terry was awarded an Australia Day medal for his services to art in Tasmania.

Terry has been exhibiting in his own right as an artist since 1971.  With a love of the landscape, gardens, and environment, Terry uses not only his understanding of the subject matter, but also his instinct and intuition to interpret it.  By abstracting the subject he allows for a personal and fresh interpretation.  In recent years, Terry has

Spontaneity, simplification, vitality are important ingredients.

Over the years Terry has exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions, including several at Saddler’s Court Gallery, and is well known to Tasmanian art collectors.
