Saddler’s Court Gallery

offers the work of more than 100 Tasmanian artists and crafts people. We choose each piece personally, not in terms of what is fashionable or what sells best, but according to its ability to reflect something of Tasmania.

George Callaghan

Born in Northern Ireland in 1941, at the age of 4 he and his family immigrated to South Africa, only to return to Belfast when he was in his early teens as his grandfather was dying. George left school at 15 to work as an apprentice commercial artist with Nicholson & Bass. A year later he commenced studying at the Belfast College of Art on a full time scholarship. After this George entered the world of advertising, working in Dublin, London, Melbourne and eventually Sydney.

George moved at the age of 32 to Tasmania. Here he has painted, produced the states first Sterling Silver Jewellery Exhibition, played guitar and harp, and sang.  George’s harp playing has led to numerous appearances on national and international television and radio. George painted in a variety of genres before arriving at what is now his own individual and recognisable style. Besides producing paintings, George has also created a series of cards and prints and several books which are currenly available from this gallery.

A bit of a gypsy in the last few years, George is currently living in Llerm, France.
