Saddler’s Court Galleryoffers the work of more than 100 Tasmanian artists and crafts people. We choose each piece personally, not in terms of what is fashionable or what sells best, but according to its ability to reflect something of Tasmania. |
Bill MearnsBorn in Scotland, Bill as a child had a love of drawing and an interest in woodcarving and making models. On leaving school he trained as a Mechanical Engineer and in 1970 moved to Hobart to live. Here Bill returned to painting and within a few years began to have annual exhibitions. With his family’s connections with the sea going back a long way, it was only natural that Bill was always vitally interested in ships and the sea. Nowadays Bill has become one of Australia’s leading marine artists with Tasmania being an ideal place for a marine artist to live. There is still a wealth of traditional vessels here and Hobart is home to the spectacular Australian Wooden Boat Festival.
Working in watercolour, Bill paints not only boats but landscapes, birds and Scottish villages. His paintings have been exhibited in Saddler’s Court Gallery and a number of national galleries since 1982. He has also exhibited in England, Scotland and New Zealand. Exhibiting now annually at this gallery, Bill's next exhibition of new paintings will be held in November 2012. Until then, see images below for Bill Mearns' paintings currently available for sale from Saddler's Court Gallery.
