offers the work of more than 100 Tasmanian artists and crafts people. We choose each piece personally, not in terms of what is fashionable or what sells best, but according to its ability to reflect something of Tasmania.
Born in Melbourne in 1955, Mark moved to Tasmania in 1980 after completing an Associate Diploma Art & Design (Ceramic Design) at Caulfield Institute of Technology. Since then, production ware has been Mark’s main focus and time has seen the range of ware grow to include everything from mugs and tea pots to large garden bells. To keep in step with the changes in fashion, Mark has developed new glazes and designs, currently producing several unique ranges.
As with many studio potters, Mark’s workshop is in the back garden and with the changes of seasons there is always something there “that might look good on a pot”. Iris, Fuchsia, Pansy and Butterfly have all featured as motifs with each design requiring its own glaze. Mark admits that besides his garden, the other main influence on his work is the mountainous terrain of Tasmania. He recreates some of Tasmania’s best loved scenes (including the Richmond Bridge) on his Mountain collection. Mark has been expanding his Crystalline range and has also made some fine pieces using porcelain.
