KIM PEN PANG
Originally from Singapore, Kim has been living in Australia since 1988.
He
became interested in pottery after moving to Magnetic Island, in North
Queensland, in 1990.
He began his studies at the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE in Townsville,
continued at James Cook University, then moved to Hobart where he
completed
a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in ceramics. He plans to continue his
studies in 2000 by working towards a Master's Degree.
While working in tropical North Queensland, Kim used a bright palette of
glaze colours which reflected the environment. Since working in Hobart he
has extended his experience by exploring the subtle colours that capture
the
Tasmanian atmosphere.
His teapots are thrown on a potter's wheel then sculpted into shapes full
of
humour and movement, with unusual glaze colours. His previous experience
as
a dancer is reflected in his interest in movement and form, and his work
is
characterised by life and energy with a whimsical touch.
