Gillem Reid

Born in Wollongong in N.S.W. in 1940, Gillem settled in Tasmania in 1957. She worked as a Draughtsman’s tracer, and has a Certificate in Graphic Design.

She returned to Rosny College in 1988 when her family had grown, obtained her Level III Certificate in Fine Art, and went on to paint with Lynne Andrews at Studio One.

She tutored groups in the Derwent Valley for three years, helping to encourage beginners, and urging the more advanced to paint beyond the bounds of visual reality.

Her interests have been very diverse, as shown by her membership of the Arts Society, the T.A.C.A. ( a contemporary art group) her ventures into pottery, which led into sculptural papier mache, and her design and production of floor rugs.

Since 1990 Gillem has exhibited in several major joint exhibitions, has had 6 solo exhibitions in Burnie and Hobart, and is represented in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, and overseas.

Painting and touring in France in 1992 has developed and broadened the range in both palette and subject matter, and Gillem feels she has gained a new freedom. The words of Piet Mondrian  sum up her approach:-

"Every true artist always has been inspired more by the beauty of line and     colour and the relations between them than by concrete subject of the picture."
