BARRY and MARILYN BURKE

Carved wooden bowls

Barry and Marilyn, from St Helen’s in Tasmania, create wooden bowls out of “burls”, (the outgrowths on large trees, particularly eucalypt, myrtle and sassafras) by carving the form, and finishing in as natural a way as possible by oiling the timber with vegetable oil. The result is bowls of practical use, but also of great beauty as the rich colours of the timbers and the variety in the grain are allowed a natural glow.
